Attractions to visit in Derbyshire

Mercia Marina is an impressive attraction near Derby in England and is considered the largest inland marina in Europe. It is situated between the villages of Willington and Findern in Derbyshire and covers an area of about 30 hectares. This modern facility, opened in 2008, branches off from the Trent and Mersey Canal, a historic canal that has played an important role in the British waterway network since its completion in 1777. Mercia Marina combines the beauty of nature with a diverse range of leisure activities and is a popular destination for day trippers, boat enthusiasts, and families looking to spend a relaxed time in the idyllic landscape.

Family friendly activities at the marina

The marina is home to hundreds of narrowboats - slim, traditional canal boats that bring the harbor to life and provide a charming sight, especially when the sun glistens on the water. Along the waterfront, there is a wooden boardwalk that is the centerpiece of the facility. Here, independent boutiques and specialty shops offer a wide range of products - from designer clothing and handicrafts to plants and personalized gifts. Notable is the farm shop, which sells regional specialties such as fresh fruit, smoothies, and savory platters. Several restaurants and cafes also provide culinary delights, including a two-story restaurant overlooking the marina and a floating café on a narrowboat, creating a relaxed atmosphere.

Boat tours on the Trent canal

The surroundings of Mercia Marina are a paradise for nature lovers. The grounds include expansive green areas, a wildlife lake, and numerous walking trails that lead through the peaceful landscape. Three specially designed nature trails invite visitors to explore the flora and fauna, with a focus on engaging children in nature. Highlights include the sensory garden, a lovingly landscaped area with fragrant plants, a wishing well, and seating areas inviting visitors to linger. Impressive wood carvings, such as depictions of Neptune and the Green Man adorned with birds and animals, can be found along the paths, adding an artistic touch to the area.

Outdoor activities in nature

The marina offers a variety of activities for visitors. Guests can stroll along the canal or use bicycles, which are available free of charge, to explore the surroundings. Boat trips on the Trent and Mersey Canal are another attraction, allowing visitors to experience the beauty of the waterways up close. The area is also an ideal starting point for excursions to the nearby Derbyshire Dales, the Peak District, or the National Forest, all of which attract with their natural beauty. The marina is family and dog-friendly, with wide, well-maintained paths that are also wheelchair accessible, as well as areas where dogs can roam free as long as they remain under control.

Dining options at the marina

Mercia Marina is not only a place of relaxation but also a vibrant hub for events. Regular markets take place here, such as a specialties and crafts market on the first Sunday of every month, as well as seasonal events like open-air cinema screenings or Christmas light installations that attract visitors from the region. The facility is continuously growing, with plans for an expansion called "The Piazza" to create more high-quality shops, restaurants, and job opportunities. Ample parking is available, and the entire site is designed to remain easily accessible.
